I Am Standing At The Railway Station… (‘Blue Collar’ Girl) by M. Ancharov (1973), English by Vesper Lynd

I am standing at the railway station

Watching trains arrive and leave

The flowers weave upon my shawl and on my sleeve

Shawl1

The railway stretches far ahead

It comes to such a tiny thread

Where are you, my green years – younger days?

Where are they my green years – younger days?

Shawl32

There was a humble worker girl

The factory was home to her

All by herself as grass up in the field…

Was kind and caring to her friends

Shawl33

From bitter people she took no offence,

Was honest to the world and to herself

Was honest to the world and to herself…

Shawl2

The wheels are turning fast and slow

The lacy thread is weaving on

The soul is full of fire as in Spring

Shawl23

But years like an ocean storm –

The grey and white sonata form

Shawl34

No calls to dance, not a brief romantic fling…

La-la-la-la-la-la…

Shawl7

Sweet memories like a pepper tree

Ah, future! What will be, will be…

My Spring is gone, it’s time that I agree

Shawl22

So how did it turn out to be

All silk embroidered in a ‘major key’

The simple canvas of my life’s decree?

The simple canvas of my life’s decree…

Shawl14

Come look at her – right there she walks

Hard working simple common girl

Who’s never shy of working hard in any role…

And if you can be nice to her

And look into her eyes once more

You would discover treasure of her soul

You may discover treasure of her soul

Shawl13

I am standing at the railway station

Watching trains arrive and leave

The flowers weave upon my shawl and on my sleeve

Shawl4

The railway goes so far ahead

It comes to such a tiny thread

Where are you, my green years – younger days?

Where are they, my green years – younger days?
